As per the reports, Sacheen passed away on Sunday, October 3 at the age of 75. Charles Koshiway was Sacheen Littlefeather’s husband, and they were married for many years before her husband’s death in his late 70s. Sacheen’s net worth stood at $1.5 million.
The tragic news of the actress’ demise was confirmed by the Academy of Motion Pictures on Sunday night. It has been reported that the activist had been suffering from breast cancer.
According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter, the actress’ caretaker revealed to the outlet that Littlefeather passed away at her home in the Northern California city of Novato surrounded by her loved ones.
In June this year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences issued an apology to the actress for her treatment at the Oscars night in 1973.
At the time, the activist was only given 60 seconds to read her speech on Native American rights, and soon afterwards she was escorted off the stage while the audience started booing.
At the time, Sacheen revealed why Marlon Brando didn’t accept the award as she said, “He very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award.”
She further went on to say that, “And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry. and on television in movie reruns, and also with recent happenings at Wounded Knee.”
After almost 50 years since the incident, the Academy has given an apology to the actress. In a letter dated June 18, the-then AMPAS president David Rubin issued an apology to the Native American civil activist.
In the letter Rubin wrote, “The abuse you endured because of this statement was unwarranted and unjustified.
Our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Sacheen Littlefeather. May the departed soul rest in peace!
