2022 Men’s Rugby World Cup of Sevens List of Participating Teams, Schedule, Date, Time, Venue, Format, And Fixtures
On the men’s side of the draw, both Scotland and Wales will need to make it through the opening round, but England ought to be one of the teams to advance far. Other rugby powerhouses who want to challenge the Fijians include Australia, New Zealand, and hosts South Africa, who won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in August after winning the 2021/22 World Rugby Sevens Series.
Portugal unexpectedly beat rival Spain in a qualifying play-off to earn a spot in the men’s competition. Additionally, South Korea has earned a spot in the World Cup Sevens for the first time since 2005. Other non-traditional rugby nations that have succeeded to qualify for the tournament include Germany, Jamaica, Chile, and Uruguay.
In an elimination bracket style, the men’s draw will feature 24 teams, while the women’s draw will feature 16 teams. To create a final rating of each competing team, loser brackets will be held, thus every team will play at least four matches throughout the competition.
The top eight teams in the men’s competition have earned a bye into the Round of 16 but Pre-Round of 16 is where the remaining 16 teams begin the tournament and winners advance to the next round, while the losers are placed in the Bowl bracket. Round of 16 stage winners will advance to Championship bracket, while the Round of 16 losers will be placed in the Challenge bracket. Quarterfinals will be played inside each bracket, which are then followed by semifinals for both winners and losers, as well as placement finals.
