While discussing the several red cards he collected over his career on Gary Neville’s Stick to Football podcast, Keane spoke up about his fight with McAteer during United’s 2002 match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The two players had an unforgettable confrontation in a 2002 match when McAteer started for Sunderland against the illustrious Red Devils midfielder, who was sent off early for elbowing his opponent.
Once again, tensions flared as Keane went over McAteer’s career red cards and said that he wouldn’t “go so far” as to declare that they were both Republic of Ireland teammates, suggesting that McAteer “deserving” of the sharp end of his elbow.
Meanwhile, McAteer has acknowledged that he would be prepared to fight Keane, the former captain of Manchester United, for £1 million in order to end their long-running rivalry.
The former midfielder said something that sparked their 21-year rivalry. As per The Sun, he said:
He deserved it. I wouldn’t go that far [calling McAteer his team-mate].
“Just because you play with somebody doesn’t mean that you are mates.”
In response to Keane’s remarks, McAteer stated:
Yeah [I’m tired of it]. I’d rather he came in here now, and we just go, let bygones be bygones. Let’s just be civil.
He further continued:
Or we can get in the ring for £1million each and fight it out! Eddie [Hearn], if you’re watching. Eddie Hearn, get him on the phone.
Roy, come on. You’re better than that. And I promise to stop reacting.”
