Lukaku undertakes massive pay cut to join Roma on loan
According to reports, Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is all set to undertake a massive pay cut in order to join Serie A club AS Roma on loan. The Italian giants have agreed to pay a £5million loan fee, while Lukaku will have to take a pay-cut worth over £10m a year. Lukaku has previously opened up to the Blues about his desire to leave the club. However, he wasn’t ready to re-join Inter Milan, nor secure a desired move to Juventus.
However, Roma have stepped up in the tense situation and offered to sign Lukaku on loan. In doing so, the striker will take a massive pay cut from his current £325,000-a-week contract with Chelsea. Lukaku is all set to sign a yearly deal worth £7m to join Roma. This is a massive dip from his current contract at Chelsea where he earns £17m annually.
Interest from other clubs
While Lukakau looks set to join Roma, he initially had interest from two other clubs as well. His most recent club, Inter were ready to bring him back again for another season. Moreover, Juventus were also ready to sign the Belgian striker for a £12m salary. Meanwhile, several Saudi Arabian clubs were also keen on signing the 6’3” striker. However, Lukaku decided against a move to Saudi, while his move to Juve broke down due to fan opposition despite his interest to join.
Reunion with Jose Mourinho
Lukaku’s move to Roma would mean that he will have a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho. Interestingly, Mourinho was a major force in Lukaku’s move, even choosing to speak directly to him regarding the move. Jose allegedly told Lukaku that he is interested in bringing out the best out of him.
The pair have previously worked together on two occasions. Their first time together was during Lukaku’s first stint at Chelsea where he mostly spend time on the sidelines. Their second time together was at United, where Lukaku had a successful debut season but had a questionable second campaign. Reports indicate that talks between the two are very positive with just the minor details left to be sorted out.
Lukaku’s failed return to Chelsea
Chelsea decision to bring back Lukaku for £97million in 2021 from Inter Milan went in an awful direction. Upon his arrival, the 30-year-old seemed like the perfect answer to the club’s problems up front. However, he failed miserably and ended up scoring just eight Premier League goals. Moreover, he had a falling out with the then-manager Thomas Tuchel. As such, he got loaned back to Inter Milan in the following summer.
Interestingly, the Nerazzurri were initially interested in bringing him again for the upcoming season, but he snubbed them in favor of Juventus. However, this moved failed and left him Lukaku in a difficult spot. Much to his relief, Roma stepped up with a new offer, which is now in the works.
Lukaku possesses an estimated net worth of $150 million.
