Roger Federer Withdraws From Tokyo Olympics 2021 Owing To Injury

Roger Federer And Johanna Konta joined Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Nick Kyrgios, and several others to withdraw from 2020 Tokyo Olympics in lieu of his injury 

The players withdrawing from the upcoming Tokyo Olympics from the world of Tennis continue to grow by the day as two more giants pulled out. Swiss Tennis giant Roger Federer and United Kingdom’s Johanna Konta became the latest casualties. While Federer pulled out due to his knee issue, Konta will skip due to the COVID-19 related challengers.

The list of Tennis players pulling out of the forthcoming global event was already a long one. Before Federer and Konta, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Serena Williams, Nick Kyrgios, Bianca Andreescu, Simona Halep, and Denis Shapovalov had decided to skip the event. More withdrawals could be on the cards.

Roger Federer announces his withdrawal owing to injury through Twitter

Despite the Swiss Olympic Association selecting Roger Federer to represent Switzerland in the event, he announced his decision to pull out via social media. Federer’s withdrawal seems due to his knee injury that has been significant in his underwhelming performances.

The 20-time grand slam winner has already endured a tough last few months, dating back to the 2021 Australian Open. The knee surgery forced him to withdraw from the entire tournament. Following that, the 39-year old could not complete his French Open campaign either.

He survived in the third round against Dominik Koepfer and pulled out before his fourth-round game, citing knee issues. The veteran hoped to return to Wimbledon strongly. Nevertheless, the eight-time champion had a meek end to his campaign.

24-year old Hubert Hurkacz inflicted a three-set defeat on Roger Federer in the quarter-final of the tournament, knocking him out. However, the 39-year old revealed he has no immediate plans of retirement and aims to play a few more years.

Roger Federer took to his official Twitter handle and said that the injury setback in the grass-court season has forced him to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics. The veteran remarked he already began his rehab and hopes to return later in the summer. He wished all the Swiss participants good luck for the global event.

Johanna Konta tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Tokyo Olympics

Meanwhile, Johanna Konta, who tested positive for COVID-19, forced her to withdraw from the event. The British Tennis star revealed that while self-isolating after coming in contact with a COVID-19 positive case, her test stated the same.

The 30-year old had to pull out of Wimbledon as well, forced to self-isolate for ten days, hours before the event started. Konta promised to return to full fitness to compete again. Furthermore, she vowed to cheer her Britain teammates, participating in the Olympics.
