The unfortunate news was announced by the football team earlier this morning on Twitter. According to reports, the star’s mother Zunilda, 66, and sister Melani, 25, died instantaneously in a car accident involving two other vehicles and a truck pulling a trailer. The horrific disaster occurred at Ramallo, Buenos Aires.

As they attempted to avoid the collision, the two drivers’ car was left crushed beneath the truck’s trailer and the other vehicle was left on the highway upside down. The truck driver, a 44-year-old man, was reportedly detained by Ramallo authorities on suspicion of manslaughter, according to local media reports.

Elias, the team’s left-back, and Zunilda had just returned from celebrating River Plate’s league championship with them. The Buenos Aires giants defeated Estudiantes 3-1 at home to finish first in the premier Argentina Professional League Primera Division with two matchdays remaining.

River Plate has mourned the death.

“We embrace and accompany our player Elias Gomez in pain at the unfortunate news of the death of his mother Zunilda and his sister Melani in an accident. Every River is by your side,” the football team posted on social media. It comes after Melani penned “We will meet again” in a hauntingly predictive Instagram post in December in memory of her deceased partner, Luciano Biglione.

Fans have remembered the athlete’s late mother and sister on social media. One fan wrote: “It’s unpredictable how life can change from one moment to the next.”

“When these types of tragedies occur, football takes a backseat. I wish him and his entire family strength. It hurts so much to have to break this news. RIP”. Additionally, a River Plate supporter account on Twitter wrote: “All of River supports Elias Gómez during these trying times for him; may the Club give him everything he needs and stand by him now.”

After joining the Rosario Central youth club in 2006, Elias, then 29 years old, started his professional football career. He rose swiftly through the ranks and joined Defensa y Justicia in 2016. He played twelve matches for them before going back to Rosario in June 2017. Elias signed up for Argentinos Juniors on loan in January 2019 and scored his debut goal against Estudiantes the following month.
