He continued to accumulate runs for Australia after his debut. His 140* performance in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup final is best known for helping the powerful Australians thrash India out of the competition while scoring a staggering total of 359 runs.
He was in excellent form, having amassed 4800 runs in 131 ODIs at an average of 41.37 and 5115 runs in 71 Test matches at an average of 52.73. By that time, he already had 26 international hundreds.
In 2002, he took over as Australia’s captain after Steve Waugh was demoted from the position. While his forceful leadership won him many admirers, it also drew criticism for his tough play.
For many years, Ponting’s team was regarded as the finest in the world, and he was considered the greatest captain of his time. Australia had the longest winning streak of any team during World Cups, going 34 games. They enjoyed a 16-match winning streak in Tests. Except for India, his side outperformed every country in their own country.
Australia won 165 ODI matches under Ponting, for a winning percentage of 76.14, and 48 Test matches, for a winning percentage of 62.33.
