Dr Debashish Danda, a distinguished rheumatologist and retired professor from the Rheumatology Department of Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore passed away at the age of 60 in a car accident near Vellore
The unfortunate demise of Dr. Debashish Danda occurred on Saturday when Dr. Danda was en route from Chennai to Vellore via the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway. His vehicle collided with a container lorry near the Alamelurangapuram area, resulting in fatal injuries.

The collision caused extensive damage to Dr. Danda’s vehicle and he suffered fatal injuries, including severe bleeding. Bystanders at the scene promptly notified the police who conducted an initial inquiry and took possession of his body.
Dr. Danda’s body was later sent to Vellore Government Hospital for post-mortem. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
Dr. Debashish Dandais survived by his wife, Dr. Sumita Danda, who leads the Clinical Genetics Department at CMC Vellore. His son, Asheerwad Danda. Dr. Danda was a native of Satchand village in Sabroom under South Tripura district.
He earned his MD in internal medicine from GSVM Medical College in Kanpur, his MBBS from Jipmer, Puducherry, and his three-year post-doctoral degree (DM) in clinical immunology from SGPGIMS in Lucknow.
After retiring from CMC Vellore on October 28, Dr. Danda joined the Narayana Health College in Bengaluru. Dr. Danda joined the faculty of medicine at CMC Vellore in 1996, where he set up the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology and served as the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases.
He was the president of APLAR (Asia Pacific League of Associations For Rheumatology) and a past president of the Indian Rheumatology Association.
This is a great loss to the medical community, and Dr. Debashish Danda’s contributions to the field of Rheumatology will always be remembered and cherished.
