This shocking news of Greene’s death was first shared by writer and editor Ruth Reichl, “I am very sad to share the news of Gael Greene’s demise this morning. A huge heart and a huge talent as she is irreplaceable.”
Beth Shapiro who is an executive director for Citymeals on Wheels, also wrote, “Gael built a great influence as a food critic, at a time when fewer doors were open to women.”
Citymeals board co-president Daniel Boulud also paid a tribute to the critic and stated, “Gael Greene was a savage food critic and an even fierce advocate for one’s who needs a voice.”

After a year at the New York Post as being general assignment reporter, Gael joined with New York Magazine as a critic in 1968. Gael’s reviews earned massive popularity for being a blend of humor and food assessment.
Gael Greene worked with this magazine till 2002 and wrote numerous memorable articles over the years including The Mafia Guide to Dining Out and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Ice Cream But Were Too Fat To Ask.
Gael Greene also has a few writing credits to her name including the non-fiction guide, the Delicious Sex: A Book for Women and the Men Who Want to Love Them Better, Blue Skies and No Candy and Doctor Love.
In 1981 with Chef James Beard she launched City Meals on Wheels. In the very first year, the organization raised around $35,000, which grew over the years and distributed around 2.7 million meals in the previous year.
Citymeals’s founding executive director Marcia Stein, stated in a statement “Gael Greene could not live with the idea that a city of such abundance and food could not feed its oldest and most frail. For almost 4 decades she used her creativity to ensure there would always be a nutritious meal at the door for them, every day of the year.” Greene was also credited with coining the term ‘foodie’ which was first used in a column in 1980.
