Jah Shaka was born in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica. He started his successful career as an operator on the Freddie Cloudburst Sound System. In 1956, he moved to London, where the Windrush generation faced harsh racism. Even though he had to deal with these problems, he made his own sound system called The Jah Shaka Sound System.

He also made many famous reggae songs and ran his own record label called Jah Shaka Music. In the 1980 movie Babylon, he played himself. The movie showed how he had to deal with racial tensions when he went to the UK.
