Even though the acronym “RCTA” has been popular on TikTok for over a month and has received over 5.8 million views, the majority of users still don’t know what it means. Recently, @kyamewa clarified that RCTA stands for “race change to another” and similarly, the term ECTA stands for “ethnicity change to another” meaning. More than 33,000 people have seen the original definition explanation video, which also contains hundreds of comments.
Although it’s still unclear where the phrase “RCTA” first appeared, TikTok users started using it more frequently around September 2022. In that month, TikTokers started posting videos with the #RCTA, openly announcing their racial shift. In the bulk of these videos, white people who identify as Korean, Chinese, or Japanese are seen. They frequently go into detail about their reasons for making such an identification and the efforts they are taking to identify with their preferred race.
Why RCTA term isn’t appreciated by majority of people?
In essence, this is the same as being transracial; however, those who identify as RCTA think that because they have made an effort to understand more about the inner culture and languages, they are more intelligent than others. During her explanation, @kyamewa revealed that she moved to Canada approximately seven years ago and was subject of racism. Additionally, she was admitted into English second Language program, which made her seem as if she didn’t know English.
In addition, she claimed that the RCTA-identifying persons are unaware about the reality of racism and experiences of minorities. It is believed that the popular acronym refers to people like Oli London, who was born Caucasian but, underwent 32 surgeries to look similar to a Korean person.
