The championship is played in a test format since 1935. Here is the Ranji Trophy Winners list over the years.

The Ranji Trophy championship was named after a famous Indian cricketer name H Ranjitsinhji. He is the only Indian cricketer who has played for the English test team at that time.

The first-ever edition of the Ranji Trophy was held back in 1935. Mumbai won the inaugural tournament after defeating Madras in a 16-team knockout tournament. Since then Mumbai has lifted the title 41 times which is the most by any team.

Mumbai also holds the record for the most number of appearances in the finals of the Ranji Trophy(46). In the span of 1953-1973 Mumbai team was having an invincible run in which they won 18 titles out of 20.

Karnataka has won the title 8 times and is the second most successful team in the tournament. Delhi and Baroda have tasted victory on 7 and 5 occasions respectively.

In the latest edition of the Ranji Trophy, Madhya Pradesh won their maiden title by defeating 41-time champions Mumbai in the finals.
