The tournament is officially called the IDFC FIRST Bank Ranji Trophy and features 38 teams competing in a round-robin stage followed by knockout rounds.
In April 2023, the BCCI had announced an increase in prize money for the domestic tournaments, with the Ranji Trophy winners receiving a cash reward of INR 5 crore and the runners-up, losing semi-finalists receiving INR 3 crore and INR 1 crore respectively.
Talking about the salary of Ranji matches, it is based on experience, for example, players who have experience of more than 40 matches get 60 thousand rupees per day. Players who have played between 20 to 40 matches get 50 thousand rupees daily, while players who have played less than 20 matches get 40 thousand rupees per day and players do not play two matches but are part of the team, they also get money. Players sitting on the bench in Ranji Trophy get half the amount of the playing eleven.

Much to the delight of all cricket fans, the tickets for all matches in the tournament are free. Notably, this is the only tournament where fans can attend for free at all the stadiums. The tickets for the upcoming tournament are free of charge to encourage people to attend games.

Ranji Trophy 2025 format
The tournament features the following two main categories:
- Elite Division: This division comprises of 32 teams divided across four groups (A, B, C, D) of eight teams each
- Plate Division: This division consists of six teams competing in a round-robin format
Each of the eight teams in the Elite category will play against the other seven teams in their group once. Meanwhile, the top two teams from each group will progress to the quarterfinals. Following which the top four teams from the Plate division will then advance to the semi-finals. The finalists from this division will then earn a promotion to the Elite division for the following season.

Ranji Trophy 2025 key features
Given below are the key features of the ongoing tournament:
- Extended Duration
Unlike the previous other seasons this season will feature an extended six months instead of the typical three months. The tournament will be split into two windows where each team can play five league matches before the knockout rounds.
- Relegation and Promotion
The competition will feature the same relegation and promotion system from the previous seasons. At the end of the tournament, the bottom two teams from the Elite division will go down to the Plate division, while the top two teams from the Plate division will join the Elite division.
- Two phases
The upcoming season will feature two phases, which will allow players to take part in other tournaments as well, like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
