In an exciting tournament finale on Thursday, domestic powerhouse Mumbai lifted the prized Ranji Trophy for a record-extending 42nd time, breaking an eight-year title drought.

Mumbai set a formidable target of 538 runs for Vidarbha by scoring 418 runs in the second innings, led by half-centuries from Ajinkya Rahane (73), and Shreyas Iyer (95).

In the top match, they defeated a tenacious Vidarbha team by 169 runs on the fifth and final day. When Vidarbha began on 248 for five, needing another 290 runs to win, they kept Mumbai at bay for the whole first session thanks to captain Akshay Wadkar (102) and the unsung hero Harsh Dubey (65).

In the end, the side was bowled out for 368. Mumbai secured the win with a last-wicket wicket from Dhawal Kulkarni, who is scheduled to retire at the end of this season.

The last time Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy was against Saurashtra, which was eight years ago. Meanwhile, after winning their last two Ranji finals, Vidharbna suffered an excruciating defeat today.

Ranji Trophy 2024 highest runs scorer and wicket taker

In the 2023–24 Ranji Trophy season, Ricky Bhui of Andhra Pradesh emerged as the top run scorer. In eight games, he amassed 902 runs at an average of 75.16.

The highest wicket-taker in nine matches, with 53 scalps including three five-wicket hauls, is R Sai Kishore of Tamil Nadu.

Ranji Trophy 2024 prize money

After defeating Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy 2023, the Mumbai cricket team is expected to collect an additional amount of Rs. 5 crore as per the announcement by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik released a statement which read:

MCA president Amol Kale and Apex Council has decided to double the Ranji Trophy prize money.

Further was said:

The MCA will pay an additional sum of five crore of rupees to the winning Mumbai Ranji Trophy team. It has been a great year for the MCA as the association has won 7 titles and we have made it knock out stage in all age groups in BCCI tournaments.”

In addition, the losing semifinals and runners-up of the Ranji Trophy would receive ₹1 crore and ₹3 crore, respectively.
