Ranil Wickremesinghe is the present and 9th president of Sri Lanka since 21st July 2022. Ranil also holds the position of the Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka and he also is a member of parliament from the United National Party (UNP).

He has been the leader of the UNP since 1994. Ranil served as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in six separate stints, from 1993 to 1994, 2001 to 2004, 2015 to 2018, 2018 to 2019, and in 2022. Ranil Wickremesinghe also served as Leader of the opposition from 1994 to 2001 and from 2004 to year 2015.
73 year old Ranil Wickremasinghe married Maithree Wickremesinghe, Sri Lankan academician and professor of English in year 1994 with the two having no children. His father Esmond Wickremesinghe was an entrepreneur and Nalini Wickremesinghe. He studied at the University of Ceylon and Royal College.
His parents had five children, Shan, Ranil, Niraj, Channa and Kshanika and Ranil is the second eldest among the siblings.

Ranil Wickremesinghe joined the United National Party (UNP) and progressed through its ranks. Ranil was appointed as the chief organizer of the Kelaniya Electorate in mid-1970s and was later on appointed as chief organizer of the Biyagama Electorate, which he won in year 1977 parliamentary elections and entered parliament.
On 7th May in year 1993, Wickremesinghe was sworn in as prime minister after President Ranasinghe Premadasa was assassinated by the Tamil Tigers and Prime Minister D. B. Wijetunga was appointed as the president. During his term, Ranil was credited for pushing the country through an impressive economic transformation and was generally backed by the business community
On 20th July, Ranil was elected as 9th President of Sri Lanka by Parliament of Sri Lanka in a secret ballot to serve for the remaining year of Rajapaksa’s term, which was supposed to end in November 2024. He defeated his main rival, Dullus Alahapperuma, with more than 130 votes to 82. On 21th July, had been sworn in as the ninth President of Sri Lanka at Parliament premises before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
