The jury granted $2 million to Heard, who had countersued for $100 million, after finding that Depp’s former attorney, Adam Waldman, had made defamatory remarks about the Aquaman actor. In her first interview since the decision, Heard told NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie that the verdict falling mainly in Depp’s favour was unavoidable given his celebrity reputation and random witness selection. “The jury looked at the facts you gave, they listened to your testimony, and they did not believe you,” Guthrie said in a preview of the primetime special, which aired on Today on Monday. In response, Heard asked the jury, “How could they make a decision?” How could they not have reached that conclusion?
“They’d sat in those seats for three weeks and heard incessant, unrelenting evidence from paid personnel and, towards the conclusion of the trial, randos, as I call them.” Among the witnesses testifying as the trial neared its end was supermodel Kate Moss, whom Heard addressed at one point during her testimony.
Heard testified about an incident in which she said Depp tried to assault her sister: “I swung at him because I remembered Kate Moss and the stairs. I hadn’t [given] a blow in any of my previous relationships. I smacked him right in the face for the first time.”
The declaration allowed Depp’s team to have Moss testify on their client’s behalf, dealing an immediate blow to Heard’s accusations. Moss dispelled the story during her virtual testimony, which lasted less than four minutes, revealing that she stumbled while walking down a rain-soaked flight of stairs while on vacation with Depp in Jamaica in the 1990s.
“I shouted because I didn’t know what happened to me and I was in pain,” Moss stated. “He came sprinting back to rescue me and took me to my room and provided me medical treatment.”

When asked if Depp ever forced her down a flight of stairs, Moss replied, “No, he never pushed, kicked, or hurled me down any stairs.” In other parts of the interview, which will run as a primetime special on NBC on Friday, Heard said of the jury’s decision, “He’s a well-liked character, and many people believe they know him. He’s an amazing performer.”
The Texas native also addressed the social media hostility she had received during the six-week trial. “I don’t care what anyone thinks of me or what judgements you want to make about what happened in my own house, in my marriage, behind closed doors,” she told Guthrie.
As a result, I don’t take it personally. “Even if you believe I am deserving of all this hatred and vitriol, even if you believe I am lying, you couldn’t look me in the eyes and tell me that you believe there has been a fair portrayal on social media.
