Head to Head: 1-1

This will be the third encounter between Koolhof/Skupski and Ram/Salisbury. Currently, the score is 1-1.

Prediction

The defending US Open winners Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury will face Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski in the 2022 US Open men’s doubles championship match on Friday, however the two Brits will be on opposite sides of the net.

On Thursday afternoon, the top-seeded duo of Ram and Salisbury narrowly upset the thirteenth-seeded pair of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(6). The American and his British partner successfully executed tactical victories at the net during the second-longest doubles match of the competition.

The top-ranked duo in the world, Ram and Salisbury, now leads Cabal and Farah 6-1. Additionally, during this year’s US Open, they had only dropped two sets. The American-British duo would become only the second team in the Open Era to successfully defend the men’s doubles crown after Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996 if they were to win this year’s championship.

Meanwhile, Koolhof and Skupski took the first set, 6-4, and the second set, with a lead. However, Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer, their rivals, fought back to draw the match. Koolhof and Skupski took the second set to win the match 6-4, 7-5, including 13 deuce points and some challenging lobs and groundstrokes from them.

The top seed this year is Ram and Salisbury, who are joined by the lone remaining American in the men’s doubles tournament. The Dutch-British team still holds the tour record for most victories, finals, and crowns in 2022.

The stakes are high since, in addition to the championship, the winner in Arthur Ashe Stadium will probably move up to the top spot in the global rankings for men’s doubles. Since the start of their collaboration in January, Koolhof and Skupski have set it as their main objective.

Top seeds Ram and Salisbury prevailed after three hours and 14 minutes in a tense semifinal match by winning 79% (54/68) of their first-serve points. They displayed grit by coming back from being broken in the third set.

At the Grand Slam on hard courts, Ram and Salisbury now have a 16-2 combined record. Last year, they won the championship match against Bruno Soares and Jamie Murray, winning their second major prize as a team and are expected to defend the title.
