Who is Ashwini Vaishnaw?
Ashwini Vaishnaw is a former bureaucrat turned politician. He has been in the news because many people are demanding his resignation following the deadly three-train collision in Odisha.
He was born on 18 July 1970, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. His father’s name is Dau Lal Vaishnaw, and his mother’s name is Saraswati Vaishnaw.
Ashwini Vaishnaw completed his schooling at St. Anthony’s Convent School, Jodhpur, and at Mahesh School, Jodhpur. Subsequently, he attended MBM Engineering College (JNVU) in Jodhpur, where he studied engineering in electronics and communications. Later, he attended IIT Kanpur, where he got his M. Tech. degree. While in the US, he did his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
He is married, and his wife’s name is Sunita Vaishnav. They are the parents of two children named Rahul Vaishnaw and Tanya Vaishnaw. Ashwini is currently 52 years old.
His career
Ashwini Vaishnaw held executive roles with GE Transportation and Siemens after receiving his MBA. Previous to this, he worked in both the public and commercial sectors while holding the position of deputy chairman of the Mormugao Port Trust.
He entered the Indian Administrative Service in 1994. He worked as a district collector and was instrumental in minimizing the effects of a catastrophic storm in the state of Odisha. Afterward, he worked for the former prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, rising to the position of private secretary.
Ashwini Vaishnaw left the civil service in 2010 and entered the private sector, obtaining jobs with businesses that produce automobile components. He later entered politics with the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). Later, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Odisha.
In the July 2021 cabinet reshuffle, Vaishnaw was named Cabinet Minister and given responsibility for the Ministries of Railways, Electronics and Information Technology, and Communications.
