On Saturday, May 21, 2022, an Indonesian weightlifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah made history by winning the gold medal in the 73 kg men’s event at the SEA Games 2021 in Vietnam. At the National Sports Complex in Hanoi, Rahmat lifted a total of 345 kg.

The Makassar native snatched 155 kg and lifted 190 kg in the clean and jerk. His stats outperformed those of his competition, Thai Anucha Doungsri and Malaysian Muhammad Erry Hidayat.
In addition to winning gold, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah set new SEA Games records in the snatch, clean & jerk, and total weightlifting.
The bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics 2022 improved his snatch record from 144 to 155 kilograms and his clean and jerk record from 177 to 191 kg. Rahmat set a new record for the men’s 73kg division with total weightlifting of 345 kg.

Who Is Rahmat Erwin Abdullah?
Rahmat Erwin Abdullah is a weightlifter from Indonesia. He was born on October 13, 2000, in Makassar, Indonesia. Presently, he is 21 years old. His height is 1.58 m (5 ft 2 in) while weighs 72.4 kg (160 lb).
Erwin Abdullah and Ami Asun Budiono, both former weightlifters, are his parents. Erwin qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics after winning a silver medal at the Asian Games in 2002 but was unable to compete due to injuries. Ami, his mother, earned a gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games in 1995.
In 2021, he won the prestigious KONI award in the best athlete category and was also nominated for Golden Awards SIWO PWI in the best male athlete category.
His Career
In 2019, he competed in the 73 kg division at the Asian Junior Championships in Pyongyang, North Korea, and won his first gold medal.
Following the tournament, he competed in the Philippines for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games where he earned his second gold medal in international events at the time, defeating Vietnamese lifter Phm Tun Anh.
Not only that, but when he competed for the first time in 2020 at the Asian Junior Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he earned the 3rd gold medal of his international competition after defeating Iranian lifter Mir Mostafa Javadi.
He earned a bronze medal to represent Indonesia at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
