Prediction
Rafael Nadal, the third-ranked player in the world, makes his first appearance at the US Open in 2019 when he defeated Daniil Medvedev, the current champion, in a five-set chase to claim his fourth title. In only his second tournament after a protracted injury layoff, 36-year-old Nadal defeated Medvedev in five sets in Melbourne to win a Men’s record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title. He later added a 14th Roland-Garros title in June after defeating Novak Djokovic there.
Nadal is aiming for a third Grand Slam title this season to further challenge perceptions of what is possible at this stage of his career. Wimbledon champion Djokovic is unable to compete in New York. However, a poor performance last time out in terms of preparation resulted from an early loss to eventual Cincinnati Open champion Borna Coric. So far this season, Nadal has enjoyed winning streaks of 21 and 12.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, Rinky Hijikata, the 198th-ranked player in the world, was given a wildcard to face a true sporting great in the US Open main draw, giving him the chance of a lifetime.
Hijikata has only competed in three tour-level matches prior to this week, but he made an impression in the Los Cabos Open and an ITF tournament two weeks ago in Columbus. Though Nadal enters the match a touch rusty after his most recent injury layoff, this winnable opener is just what the doctor ordered. The Spaniard may be favoured to win this match in straight sets because he is known for flying through his first few rounds at major tournaments.
