Injury of Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal’s unblemished season and 20-0 winning streak came to an end in the Indian Wells final against Taylor Fritz. Two days later, he stated that the breathing problems he had throughout the match were caused by a cracked rib.
He will be unable to practice for four weeks as a result of the injury, which will have a significant impact on the clay season.
When will Nadal Return to Court?
If the diagnosis of four to six weeks goes well, Nadal would be able to make his return at the ATP 1000 Madrid Open on May 1. The Italian Open takes place on May 8, followed by ATP 250 events in Geneva and Lyon (May 15), and finally the French Open on May 22.
Which Tournaments will Nadal Miss?
The Monte Carlo Masters, which begins on April 10 and might include returning trio Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, and Stanislas Wawrinka, will now be without Nadal. Nadal will not only miss the Monte Carlo Open, but also the Barcelona Open, which begins on April 18.
As a precautionary measure for the upcoming French open, Nadal might also opt out of playing in the Estoril Open on 25th April.
Consequences of Injury on Nadal’s Season and Rivalry with Djokovic?
The world No. 1 ranking is also affected by Nadal’s injury. Nadal has climbed to No. 3 in the world after a strong start to the season, closing the distance on world No. 1 Djokovic to 1,350 points. But Nadal’s absence will hurt his chances and the gap might widen by the time of Nadal’s return.
Nadal will also lose 500 points at the Barcelona Open, where he is the defending champion, but he may make up for it at the Madrid Open and the French Open.
In terms of his chances at the French Open, Nadal may not be harmed by not playing the complete clay season. On clay, he is unlikely to face the same problems, as two tournaments in the run-up to the French Open appear to be the maximum he will play.
