Last year in on July 6, 2022, the Government of India had nominated PT Usha to the Rajya Sabha with Prime Minister Narendra Modi even congratulating her via Twitter.
Ever since her retirement in 2000, PT Usha has been a constant presence at the national track and field meets. She is often spotted alongside her trainees from the Usha School of Athletics based in Kinalur in Kerala’s Kozhikode.
One of the most famous products of Usha’s athletics school is Tintu Luka, the current 800 meters national record holder. Luka is also an Asian Games medalist.

PT Usha career
P.T. Usha started out her career, after O.M. Nambiar, an athletics coach, first noticed her at a sports prize-distribution ceremony in 1977. He then began coaching her that same year. Usha instantly achieved quick results and won six medals at the inter-state meet for juniors, in Kollam in 1978.
This included four gold medals in 100 m, 200 m, 60 m hurdles and high jump, one silver in long jump, and one bronze in 4×100 m relay. PT Usha’s standout moment in her career came at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
She entered this competition following a string of good performances at the year’s New Delhi inter-state meet and the Mumbai Open National Championships. P.T. Usha is currently serving as a member of the Board of Advisors of India’s International Movement to the United Nations (I.I.M.U.N).

Throughout her career, P.T Usha has represented India in the 4×100 meters relay together with Valdivel Jayalakshmi, Rachita Mistry, and E.B. Shyla. The team competed in the 1998 Asian Championships in Athletics and won the gold medal. They did this while also setting the current National Record of 44.43 s.
