Who Was Prithviraj Chauhan?
Prithviraja III, also known as Prithviraj Chauhan or Rai Pithora, was a monarch of the Chauhan (Chahamana) dynasty who controlled the Sapadalaksha region, with Ajmer as his capital. He was born in 1166 in Gujarat and died in 1192 in Ajmer aged 26. His jayanti falls every year on 19 May.
He inherited an empire that spanned from Thanesar in the north to Jahazpur (Mewar) in the south, which he sought to expand via military campaigns against neighbouring kingdoms, particularly the Chandelas.
On the 12th day of the Jyeshtha month, he was born to Chahamana king Someshvara and queen Karpuradevi. Prithviraj and his younger brother Hariraja were both born in Gujarat, where their father Someshvara was raised by his maternal family at the Chaulukya court.
Prithviraj’s mediaeval biographies indicate that he was well educated. The Prithviraja Vijaya claims to know six languages, whereas the Prithviraj Raso claims to know fourteen. Raso goes on to say that he studied history, mathematics, medicine, the military, painting, philosophy (Mimamsa), and religion. He was extremely skilled at archery, according to both accounts.
According to some accounts, heย fell in love with a princessย named Sanyukta, who was the daughter of Raja Jaichand, the ruler of Kannauj and they subsequently got married after eloping.
He is known as a legendary warrior monarch who valiantly fought the Muslim ruler Muhammad of Ghor, ruler of the Muslim Ghurid dynasty, with all his might until his death.
His Death Cause
He is known for uniting many Rajput clans and defeating Muhammad Ghori’s Ghurid army in Taraori in 1191 AD.
However, he misjudged Muhammad Muhammad Ghor and never imagined he’d have to face him again. Muhammad Ghor is reported to have assaulted Prithviraj at night and deceived his troops.
Prithviraj did not have manyย friends, yet despite his army’s weakness, he fought valiantly. Ghori reappeared in 1192 CE with an army of Turkish mounted archers, beat the Rajput army on the same battleground, and beheaded Prithviraj soon after.
His loss at Tarain is remembered as a watershed moment in the Islamic invasion of India, and it is recounted in various semi-legendary stories, the most famous of which is the Prithviraj Raso.
How Did Prithviraj Chauhan Die?
It’s vital to remember that the exact date and manner of his death are unknown. Many mediaeval texts claim that Muhammad of Ghor took Prithviraj to Ajmer and maintained him as a “Ghurid vassal.”
According to Prithviraja-Prabandha, he was preparing to assassinate Muhammad and had ordered his minister Pratapasimha to give him. But the minister, on the other hand, told Muhammad of Prithviraj’s intentions. Later, Prithviraj Chauhan was kidnapped and put into a cave, where he was stoned to death.
Prithviraj Raso claims that he was transported to Ghazna and blinded before being executed in jail. Prithviraj Chauhan was slain shortly after the fight, according to ‘Viruddha-Vidhi Vidhvansa.’
