The Premier League will continue to use VAR as a major part of refereeing, but it will also aim to implement other changes suggested by the IFAB regarding extra time, offside, and fouls that lead to penalties.
The 2023–24 season will be yet another test for referees, their assistants, and VAR employees because fans routinely criticise for the changes.
Officials reportedly receive an annual retainer of between £38,500 ($46,600) and £42,000 ($50,820), based on experience, which can make their total income as high as £70,000 ($84,700) and championship referees receive the same salary to accompany the lower match fee in the second tier.

Meanwhile, the reigning champions Manchester City overcame newly promoted Burnley to kick off the 2023–24 Premier League season. The Pep Guardiola team defeated Turf Moor 3-0, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, both in the first half. This first-day game was followed by six outcomes on Saturday, with Newcastle’s 5-1 demolition of Aston Villa being the most notable. Arsenal, Brighton, Crystal Palace, and Fulham all won other games.
On opening weekend, there will be a lot of focus on how much stoppage time is allocated, since a new order to discourage time-wasting has already drawn criticism from players and managers. It is included in a general revision of the rules.
