In the winter transfer window of 2023 in Europe, there was a lot of wheeling and dealing as elite teams splashed out on some of the most promising players in the world.

Additionally, young, talented players were signed midway before being overpriced in the offseason. Three players who are 21 years old or younger, Anthony Gordon of Everton, Benoit Badiashile of Monaco, and Noni Madueke of PSV, all received significant transfers.

More so than any individual player, Chelsea and its new ownership group were not afraid to push the financial fair play rules to their absolute limit and take advantage of loopholes to stockpile some of the most sought-after talents.

The clubs that enforced the most expensive transfers during the 2023 window shouldn’t come as a surprise.

All of the top 10 transactions were initiated by English Premier League teams, while 18 of the top 20 deals were determined by the amount of the transfer fee.

The first significant transfer was when Liverpool signed Dutch teenager Cody Gakpo, but Chelsea’s mid-season spending spree, which included a £61.5 million deal for Ukrainian star Mykhailo Mudryk and Newcastle’s acquisition of Everton winger Anthony Gordon has since blown that out of the water.

Chelsea signed Benfica’s Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez for a British record 121m euro (£107m) transfer fee right before the deadline.
