US Representative Pramila Jayapal and US Senator Chris Van Hollen, both Democrats, have organized a group of over 70 colleagues to write a bicameral letter urging President Joe Biden to bring up the urgent need to defend human rights and democratic principles during his upcoming meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pramila Jayapal is a renowned US representative and politician. She has been in the news because she urged President Biden to prioritize human rights and democratic values in India during his meeting with PM Modi.
She was born on 21 September 1965 in Chennai, Madras State (present-day Tamil Nadu), India. She is of Malayali descent. Her mother’s name is Maya Jayapal, and she is a writer, whereas her father’s name is Jayapal Menon, a marketing professional. She also has an older sister named Susheela. She was raised in Indonesia and Singapore before immigrating to the U.S. in 1982. She acquired US citizenship in 2000.
After completing her schooling, Pramila Jayapal earned a BA degree from Georgetown University. Later, she also earned an MBA degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
She married twice. She first married Alan Preston. The couple became parents to a daughter named Kashika, who later started identifying herself as transgender. After divorcing Preston, she married Steven R. Williamson and became stepmother to a son named Michael. The family is currently living in Seattle.

Her career
Prior to entering the public sector, Pramila Jayapal worked as a financial analyst at PaineWebber. Later, she established the immigrant rights advocacy group Hate Free Zone, or OneAmerica.
She served in the Washington State Senate and sponsored bills on apprenticeship programs and police rape kits. In 2016, Jayapal became the first Indian-American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
She backed universal healthcare, promoted environmental justice, and co-introduced measures on openness. She is in favor of cutting back on military expenditures, immigration reform, the Equal Rights Amendment, and a prohibition on Congressional members trading stocks.
