On March 24th, 2022, it was announced that Louie Simmons, one of the all-time greatest in powerlifting, had died at the age of 74.

Westwide Barbell shared the announcement on their official Instagram page. It said,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Louie Simmons. We will make a formal announcement after we process the loss.

His cause of death has not been confirmed yet but it is said he died at the age of 74 owing to natural causes with him not suffering from any illnesses.

Who Is Louie Simmons?

Simmons was born on October 12, 1947, and is also known as the “Godfather of Powerlifting.” He is credited with revolutionising the training of individuals for strength. He was recognised for his unrivalled work ethic and unmatched expertise, which he shared at his illustrious gym, Westside Barbell.

His training system, known as the Conjugate Method, has been utilised to train players in a variety of sports that rely on strength development, such as powerlifting, track, combat sports, and football. He claimed to have designed and developed particular barbell routines for addressing shortcomings in competition lifts.

His wife is known as Louise Gjørup and they both have two children named Laura and Kevin. He was 74 years old when he took his last breath on 24 March 2022.

His Career

For more than 50 years, Simmons participated in powerlifting. Over the age of 50, he has squatted 920 pounds (420 kg), benched 600 pounds (270 kg), and deadlifted 722 pounds (327 kg). Over 4 decades, he has achieved aces in 5 distinct weight classes.

During his coaching career, Simmons’ trainees in the sport of powerlifting continue to identify his techniques as important to their training even after they leave his gym, despite Simmons’ views on performance-enhancing chemicals.

Simmons’ training methods are covered in the CrossFit Powerlifting certificate course, and he has also served as a strength consultant with collegiate and professional sports teams. His articles on training techniques were published on a regular basis in the prestigious journal Powerlifting USA.

Westside Barbell, a private gym in Columbus, Ohio, is owned by Simmons. His membership is limited to those who have accepted his offer.

He invented the Reverse Hyper, a piece of exercise equipment. After breaking his back in 1973 surgeons wanted him to undergo a procedure that would fuse part of his spine and leave two vertebrae gone. In 1974, Louie invented the Reverse Hyperextension Machine after finding the reverse hypers was the only exercise that did not cause any pain.

It wasn’t until 1994 that there was an official patent on the Reverse Hyper machine.
