Since Portsmouth has gone nine League One games without a victory, they are currently nine points outside of the playoff spots, and their chances of moving up for another season are falling. After spending 22 months at Fratton Park with him, his brother Nicky Cowley, an assistant, was similarly fired for failing to return the team to the Championship with the club now scouring for a new head honcho.

The team was led by the former Lincoln and Huddersfield coaches, who replaced Kenny Jackett, to an eighth-place finish in 2021, but missed the playoffs by two points. Then, they were led to tenth place last season.

Official club statement

“The club confirms that the Head coach Danny Cowley and the deputy’s head coach Nicky Cowley have left the Portsmouth Football Club. Andrew Cullen, the chief executive, said. “We are deeply unhappy that, in light of our recent run of results, we have today decided to split ways with Danny and Nicky.”

“Danny and Nicky have both sacrificed a lot for Pompey, working incredibly hard both inside and outside of the training facility with a passion to deliver success—not just to the football club, but to the city of Portsmouth and the larger community. Danny and Nicky both have a deep understanding of Portsmouth, and they ought to be proud of the development and innovation they brought to the club.

“We will always be appreciative of their personal dedication to reviving the unique bond between the football team and our community. We all wish Danny and Nicky the best of luck in all that they do in the future.”
