Rehman Rahi, a renowned poet and the first recipient of a Jnanpith award from Kashmir, passed away on Monday in Srinagar. According to sources, he passed away at the age of 98 at his Vicharnag home in Srinagar.

Who was Rehman Rahi?

Rehman Rahi was a well-known Indian poet. He has been in the news because he passed away recently.

His real name is Abdur Rehman Rahi. He was born on May 6, 1925, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, British Raj (now India).

After completing his schooling, he did his graduation. Later, he did his post-graduation in Persian and English from the University of Jammu and Kashmir.

He was married. However, nothing much is known about his wife. He also had four children: three sons and one daughter.

He died on January 9, 2023, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India.

His career

In 1948, Rehman Rahi started working for the government for a short time as a clerk in the Public Works Department. He was also a member of the Progressive Writers’ Association, where he later rose to the position of General Secretary.

Additionally, he edited a few editions of Kwang Posh, the Progressive Writers Association’s literary journal. Later, he was promoted to sub-editor at the Khidmat Urdu newspaper. From 1953 until 1955, he served on the editorial board of the Delhi-based Urdu daily Aajkal.

During his time as a student, he was also connected to the Kashmir Communist Party’s Cultural wing. He translated Baba Farid’s Sufi poetry from the original Punjabi to Kashmiri in his capacity as a translator.

He received the Padma Shri in 2000, the Indian Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961 for his poetry book Nawroz-i-Saba, and the Jnanpith Award in 2007. In 2000, the Sahitya Akademi in New Delhi bestowed upon him the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.

Cause of death of Rehman Rahi

He died due to natural causes.
