2022 Players Championship Finals: Michael van Gerwen vs Rob Cross Final Results, Score, & Match Summary
To continue his stellar run from early-round victories over Ryan Meikle, Cameron Menzies, & Dimitri Van den Bergh, Van Gerwen dropped three outstanding performances on Sunday to earn the £100,000 champion prize. MVG defeated fellow countryman Danny Noppert in the quarterfinals 10-7, and then dominated Luke Humphries 11-5 to go qualify for the championship match. In the final against Rob Cross, MVG thrilled raucous Butlin’s crowd with his stunning nine-darter, 170 checkout, & 142 finish on his way to winning the tournament for the seventh time in ten years.
After defeating Dirk van Duijvenbode 10-3 in the quarterfinals, when he averaged over 104 and only missed six darts at a double, Cross defeated Jonny Clayton 11-7 in the semifinals. The 2018 World Champion, who was participating in his first broadcast final in more than a year, was forced to accept the £50,000 runner-up prize after 6-11 loss against MVG. With decisive 10-3 quarter-final victory against Joe Cullen, Humphries advanced to his second straight televised semi-final, while Clayton continued his best run since September by defeating Callan Rydz with a score of 10-3.
