Who’s a Strong Contender?
According to Christopher Boan, Mike Budenholzer, a former Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks coach (and Holbrook native), is a strong contender for the Phoenix position.
Boan describes Budenholzer, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year and 2021 NBA title winner, as an ideal fit for the Suns, particularly since he’s currently available and has roots in Arizona.
Given his success with the Bucks and his history in Arizona, Boan believes Budenholzer is the most likely choice for the Suns’ next head coach. In Vogel’s sole season with the Suns, he guided the team to a 49-33 regular-season record.
However, Phoenix’s postseason was short-lived, as they were swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the third seed, in the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs.
Other Potential Candidates
Though Budenholzer is seen as the frontrunner, he’s not the only coach being considered to replace Vogel. Sam Quinn highlighted Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue, ESPN’s JJ Redick, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former Suns assistant Kevin Young as potential candidates.
However, Lue may remain in Los Angeles, Billups is still with the Trail Blazers, and Young recently took on the head coach role at BYU.
Meanwhile, Gerald Bourguet listed additional names, including Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon and former Brooklyn Nets coach Kenny Atkinson.
Besides Budenholzer, the reports feature names like Lue and Redick, but also Denver Nuggets assistant David Adelman, former Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks, and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts.
Overall, Budenholzer appears to be the top choice, but there are a variety of potential candidates that the Suns could explore as they work to build a successful future in the Western Conference.
