Pep Guardiola has been at Manchester City since 2016, yet there is a question about his position due to claims that the team broke more than 100 Premier League financial rules.

The club was charged with 115 financial rules violations during nine years, casting doubt on Guardiola’s future with the Sky Blues.

Guardiola originally had a deal with City until this summer, but in November he agreed to an extension that keeps him in the team through June 2025.

The Catalan manager has been in control of City since 2016, making him the Premier League manager with the second-longest tenure, after Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool.

He has enjoyed tremendous success with Manchester City. However, part of that success is now being questioned after City was accused of submitting false financial data and violations involving player and management compensation.

The bombshell information was a “surprise” to City, who claimed that they would use “irrefutable evidence” to put the matter “to rest once and for all,” even though the investigation has been ongoing for four years.

If they want to keep Guardiola, they’ll have to do exactly that. The 52-year-old has previously stood behind his employers when suspicions were raised, but he also stated that he would resign if the charges were shown to be true.

Where may Pep Guardiola be seen if he quits Manchester City?

By drawing that line in the sand, Guardiola opens the door to the prospect of quitting City before his contract is up. However, where might he go? Guardiola has already achieved great success with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, so he might be interested in taking on another task.

Guardiola has made it obvious in his comments on the subject that he is interested in managing internationally. He said, as per mirror.co.uk:

The next step will be a national team if the opportunity presents itself,” he said in the summer of 2021. “I must take a break after seven years (at Manchester City).

“I need to stop and look, learn from other coaches and then maybe take that path. I would like to coach in a European Championship, a Copa America, a World Cup.”

Here are some of the teams Guardiola might wind up managing shortly if it does happen.

Brazil

The most recent connection to a national team is this one. As reported by Mirror Football last month, Guardiola has already turned down the opportunity to lead Brazil.

The BBC claims that Guardiola expressed interest in taking the position in the lead-up to the 2014 World Cup after Mano Menezes was fired back in 2012, while he was on sabbatical.

Argentina

In addition to the Copa America, Guardiola hopes to manage in a World Cup. While controlling his favourite athlete “Messi”, he may accomplish this.

In 2018, there were persistent rumours that Guardiola was in line to become Argentina’s manager.

According to AS, the federation would attempt to lure him away from Man City by promising a $12 million compensation.

Sergio Aguero apparently heard Guardiola say he would “love” to lead La Albiceleste.

Netherlands

When Guardiola departs City, the KNVB (Dutch FA) hopes to persuade him to follow in the footsteps of one of his heroes, Johan Cruyff, by becoming the head coach of the Netherlands, according to an exclusive story in January 2022 from Mirror Football.

Spain

“I would love it, it would be perfect,” Luis Enrique said in 2021. “Spain could not have a better national team head coach. I would like to see the team under Pep.”

It is not something Guardiola has deemed. In 2018, he said: “I think that is not going to happen,” but did not go into any further detail.

He later informed Spanish TV: “I’ll never be coach of the national team because I’ll never be offered the job.”

Because he is a proud Catalan, Guardiola might decline the position of manager of Spain’s national team. It is a very divisive political topic that can take precedence over any sporting factors.

England

There is a little history involved. According to a 2013 article in The Independent, Guardiola asked for an interview to replace Fabio Capello as England manager, but chairman David Bernstein turned him down because he wasn’t English.

When the rumours resurfaced in 2015, Guardiola stormed out of a press conference for Bayern Munich when he was questioned about the possibility of succeeding Roy Hodgson.

Paris Saint-Germain

The only position on this list that isn’t international is PSG.

Guardiola has enjoyed great success in club football in Spain, Germany, and England, but he has never been successful in France or Italy, the continent’s other two major leagues.

France seems to be a more realistic choice given the current situation of Italian powerhouse Juventus.

L’Equipe said that the idea of luring Guardiola away from City received a lot of support last year, during the slow collapse of Mauricio Pochettino as PSG manager.

Working with Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Messi is an exciting idea, and getting to see them again would be even more so.
