Prediction

In the quarterfinal of the 2022 Japan Open on Friday, October 7, World Number 68 Pedro Martinez will compete against 120th-ranked Soon-woo Kwon.

Pedro Martinez was a 1/2 underdog against Jaume Munar, who entered the game having already defeated Casper Ruud. In the second round, it turned out to be a damp squib for him as Martinez managed to pull off a comeback victory over the favourite. Martinez defeated Munar in a match that lasted two hours and 38 minutes, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, with a total of 11 serve breaks.

Both players performed poorly on serves, winning fewer than 60% of their first serve points. Martinez was saved by Munar’s eight double-faults as she recovered from falling behind a set and 3-0 to win 12 of the following games.

Kwon won his first ATP championship the previous year, but the lacklustre performance he had in 2022 caused him to drop to the 120th position in the world rankings. So much so that, despite playing in a number of tournaments this season’s main draws, Kwon hadn’t won back-to-back matches in any of them before entering this one. Because of this, even though Kwon was considered the favourite going into his second-round match against Mackenzie McDonald, the pressure would have been all on him.

In the end, Kwon need a lot of time more than two hours on the court to win 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 and advance to the quarterfinal. He had to put up with 14 aces from McDonald and break his opponent four times while without encountering a single break point in order to secure his spot in the last eight. And Kwon now makes his debut as a fan favourite.

Kwon is favoured against a clay-court player because of his expertise playing on hard court surfaces, and a long, hard-fought match can be anticipated.
