Smith, the reigning champion, showcased his prowess in the final moments, securing his spot in round three by coming back from a 2-1 set deficit to thwart Dutch newcomer Kevin Doets in an intense match of exceptional quality. Smith teetered on the brink of becoming the first defending champion since 2009 to lose their opening match in the premier event of the sport. However, he orchestrated a spectacular comeback to sustain his pursuit of the title.
During Friday’s opening night, two other first-round matches unfolded. Simon Whitlock, the 2010 runner-up, survived a tense encounter, triumphing over former PDC Asian Championship runner-up Paolo Nebrida in a decisive-set clash. Earlier in the evening, Cameron Menzies secured a spot in the second round, setting up a showdown against 2021 semi-finalist Dave Chisnall with an impressive straight-sets victory over Rusty-Jake Rodriguez.
On Saturday, the inaugural double session of the tournament will feature the prominent matchup between Anderson and Whitlock at Alexandra Palace. Meanwhile, Jules van Dongen, the top-ranked American player, is set to make his debut against DPA qualifier Darren Penhall. The Sunday lineup will feature a headline match with world number three Luke Humphries, who is scheduled to compete against either Lee Evans or Sandro Eric Sosing.
