Prediction
World No. 8 Paula Badosa will face two-time Major champion Victoria Azarenka in the 2022 Guadalajara Open’s second round on Wednesday.
After a rather solid first half of the season, Badosa’s performance over the last several months has been underwhelming. The Spaniard appeared to be regaining her form after making it to the semifinals of the Silicon Valley Classic and the fourth round of Wimbledon, but that wasn’t the case.
After the draw was made, Zhang Shuai withdrew from the competition, and Elina Avanesyan took her place in the first round matchup that was originally scheduled to feature Victoria Azarenka. Early on in the opening set, Azarenka and Avanesyan faced off, but the Belarusian eventually won thanks to a serve break in the eighth game. Later, the former World No. 1 was serving when she had a set point, but she couldn’t win the match. She served out the set with ease in the next game, though.
With five straight service breaks to start the second set, Azarenka prevailed to take a 3-2 advantage. With a service hold to make it 4-2 in her favour and another break to make it 5-2, she increased her advantage. Then the Belarusian took the field to begin the game. After Azarenka squandered a few match opportunities, she also had to avoid blowing a break point. 6-4, 6-2 was the final score after she converted on her fourth match point.
The WTA Finals, which were held in Guadalajara the year before, saw Badosa play quite well. She might have the upper hand over the Belarusian since she can exert authority. Their recent performance suggests that there’s a chance the game will be tied. Since Badosa has generally had a stronger season, winning the tournament might provide her the motivation she needs to get to the WTA Finals.
