Parkash Singh Badal career
Parkash Singh Badal was born on December 8, 1927, in Abul Khurana, Punjab, British India. He started his political career at a young age when he became the Sarpanch of Badal village in 1947. He later became the chairman of Lambi Block Samiti. In 1957, he was elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the first time by the Indian National Congress. He went on to be reelected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly multiple times, with the exception of 1992, from 1969 to 2012.
Parkash Singh Badal held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly on three occasions – in 1972, 1980, and 2002. Parkash took office as the Chief Minister of Punjab for the first time in March 1970. Additionally, he was appointed as a Union Minister in the government led by Prime Minister Morarji Desai in 1977, serving as the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation.
In 1996, Parkash Singh Badal became the President of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a prominent regional political party in Punjab. He served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1997 to 2002, and then again from 2012 to 2017, making him the Chief Minister of Punjab for the fifth time.
Parkash Singh Badal has had his share of controversies in his political career. He has spent a total of 17 years in jail for various reasons. Parkash Singh Badal faced imprisonment during the period of Internal Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government from 1975 to 1977, due to his involvement in a civil liberty agitation.
