The Paris marathon has been run annually since 1977 when it first started. Although there have been a few years that have missed out. Like the 2020 edition because of the Covid pandemic, the organizers try the best to hold it every year. In this article we will tell you about the prize money and it’s distribution but first let’s know a bit more about the event.

The marathon begins from the Champs-Elysees, an avenue in the city of Paris and continues through the south-east of the city along the river Seine. This marathon finally comes to end on Avenue Foch. The marathon had initially begun in 1896, however, it used to be of 40 kilometers which was two kilometer short to be called a marathon.

The rules were eventually changed in 1976 when the marathon’s distance was made to 42.195 kilometers. The route of the race is very attractive which runs through the city. It attracts over 45,000 participants every year and the participant limit is set at 50,000.

Paris marathon prize money distribution

The prize pool for the marathon is set at roughly $300,000. Take a look at how this money is distributed among it’s winners:

  • Winner Men’s and Women’s: $63,000 each.
  • Second Place Men’s and Women’s: $38,000 each.
  • Third Place Men’s and Women’s: $25,000 each.

Apart from the first three places every runner who finishes in the top ten also receives a share from the prize pool. However, their share has not been revealed.

Moreover, there’s a catch in the winner’s prize money, you don’t get the prize just by simply winning the marathon. The person who has finished the marathon first needs to complete the course in a given time to claim the prize. The male winner must complete the track within 2 hours 11 minutes and 45 seconds.

Whereas, the female winner must complete the track within 2 hours 23 minutes and 15 seconds. This is what makes the Paris marathon truly unique. As this does not happen in any other marathon around the world.
