The Surfing Federation of India, which oversees the sports of surfing and stand-up paddling in India, is hosting the two-day national Stand-Up Paddling Championship.
At the pristine Pirappanvalasai Beach in Rameshwaram, the tournament’s second edition will feature the reigning champions and top Indian stand-up paddlers Sekar Patchai, Monica Pugazharasu, and Gayatri Juvekar. The contest will be put on by QTT Adventure Sports Academy (Quest Academy), with assistance from the Tamil Nadu Surfing Association.
Men, Women, and Groms (U16) paddlers will compete in the Palkbay National Stand-Up Paddling Championship in the three disciplines of sprint (200m), technical (2 km), and distance (12 km). In the Sprints class of racing, there will also be an open-category event for non-ranking athletes to gauge their paddle strength and speed.
The Palkbay National SUP Championship is expertly run by ISA (International Surfing Association) regulations. Along with the defending champions Sekar Patchai, who won all the races in the men’s division last year, Monica Pugazharasu, who won the distance race (6 KM), and Gayatri Juvekar, who won the sprint race in the women’s division, some other notable names to be seen in action this year include Manikandan D and Praveen.
Jehan Driver, General Secretary, of the Surfing Federation of India, stated:
The objective behind the Palkbay SUP Challenge was to promote the exciting sport of Stand-Up paddling and we are glad that in a short span, we have gathered enough traction to have new faces getting ready to fight it out in just the second edition.”
