Arshad Nadeem is a Pakistani javelin thrower who was born on January 2, 1997, in Mian Channu, Pakistan. He is the reigning Olympic champion in Menโ€™s javelin throw after recently winning gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics with an Olympic record throw of 92.97 metres. He is a devout Muslim and describes himself as an introvert, with not much friends.

Arshad was born in a low-income family, to a father who worked as a mason and a part-time Neza Bazi (tent pegger). At a very young age, Nadeem had an interest in various sports like badminton, football, cricket, discus throw, and more. ย However, he never considered becoming a professional, but after much persuasion from his brothers, Arshad began to take athletics seriously. He eventually decided to give his full in javelin throw and go professional.

According to his father, Muhammad Ashraf, the local community played a pivotal role and villagers and relatives pooled their resources to fund Arshad who now has a net worth of $2 million.

Arshad Nadeem is currently 27 years old and stands at a height of 1.9 m (6 ft 4 in). Arshad roughly weighs around 95 kg (209 lb).

Career and achievements

Arshad started out his javelin throw career under Rasheed Ahmad Saqi, who trained him on the various techniques involved. Arshad barely had any money to purchase proper sports equipment and it was Rasheed who bought him his first pair of shoes. Nadeem also shared how he would use bamboo sticks to practice his throw by asking the village craftsman to shape it into a javelin.

Years before setting the Olympic record of 92.97 metres, Arshad registered his first throw under 60 metres. Later, during his WAPDA trials, Arshad threw 65 metres, which caught the eye of national coaches. His first major competition was the 2016 South Asian Games Guwahati, where he won bronze with a throw 78.33 m. That same year, he won another bronze at the 2016 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Ho Chi Minh.

The following year, he won a bronze at the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games Baku, Azerbaijan. He won another bronze at the 2018 Asian Games Jakarta, Indonesia. Arshad won his first international at the 2019 South Asian Games Kathmandu, Nepal. He then won another gold at the 2021 Imam Reza Cup Mashhad, Iran.

At the 2021 Olympic Games Tokyo, in Japan Arshad came in at 5th with a throw of 84.62 m. However, he bounced back and won a gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games Birmingham with a throw of 90.18 m. He won another gold at the 2022 Islamic Solidarity Games Konya with a throw of 88.55 m. Last year, he won a silver at the 2023 World Championships Budapest, Hungary, with a throw of 87.82 m. And now, he has just won a gold at the 2024 Olympic Games Paris, France with a throw of 92.97 m.

Marriage and children

Arshad Nadeem is currently married and has two children, a daughter and a son.
