Since winning his historic gold medal at Tokyo 2020, the Indian javelin sensation hasn’t competed. The 24-year-return old’s to the field, on the other hand, will be a baptism by fire.
The Paavo Nurmi Games, a gold event on the World Athletics Continental Tour, is one of the most important track-and-field tournaments outside of the Diamond League, and the field for this year’s edition is quite strong.
In addition to Neeraj Chopra, the 10-athlete men’s javelin throw competition in Turku will feature reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, and London 2012 Olympic gold medalist Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago.
Chopra’s arch-rival, German ace Johannes Vetter, was originally scheduled to compete in Turku but has withdrawn. Julian Weber and Andreas Hofmann, two of his compatriots, are, nonetheless, on the entrance list.
Neeraj Chopra will have his job cut out for him against a star-studded field, the majority of whom have been in full-fledged competition mode for roughly ten months.
This season in the Doha Diamond League, both Peters and Vadlejch have broken the 90m barrier. In 2022, Peters’ gold-medal-winning throw of 93.07m in Doha is the best of the season.
Chopra, who is the lone Indian competing at the Paavo Nurmi Games, will try to get back into shape before the World Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games next month.
After Turku, Neeraj Chopra will compete in Finland’s Kuortane Games before going to Sweden for the Diamond League’s Stockholm leg.
