Manning, the manager of Oxford United, has been named head coach of Bristol City. The 38-year-old takes over for Nigel Pearson, who was fired last month with the team ranked 15th in the Championship following a stretch of five defeats in their previous seven games.
After barely eight months as the club’s manager, Manning departs Oxford in second place in League One, three points behind leaders Portsmouth after 15 games. Chris Hogg, who will take over as assistant head coach, and Manning both arrive from Oxford United.
Manning, whose coaching resume is excellent and includes a spell with the Belgian club Lommel, which is controlled by the City Football Group, the organisation that manages Manchester City, offers Bristol City a new and interesting viewpoint. On Saturday, when the squad plays Queens Park Rangers, he will be taking the pitch for the first time.
Given the squad’s relegation battle upon his arrival in March, the 38-year-old coach’s performance at Oxford United, where he guided the side to second place in League One this year, has drawn plaudits.
