Joanna Simon was a well-known American mezzo-soprano and journalist. She has been in the news because she died recently after battling a deadly disease.

Her full name was Joanna Elizabeth Simon. She was born in New York City on October 20, 1936. She grew up in Fieldston, a section of Riverdale in the Bronx. Her father’s name was Richard L. Simon who was the founder of the Simon & Schuster publishing company and her mother’s name was Andrea Heinemann Simon who was a civil rights activist.

She has a brother named Peter Simon, and two younger sisters named Carly and Lucy Simon, both of whom are well-known singers.

She did her schooling at Riverdale Country School. She later enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College, where she earned a philosophy degree. She also studied voice under contralto Marion Freschl, who changed the direction of her career to opera.

She later sought additional study at the International Opera Studio in Zurich.

Joanna Simon married journalist Gerald Walker on December 4, 1976. They stayed together till Walker passed away in 2004. She later met Walter Cronkite, with whom she dated from 2005 until 2009.

In November 1962, Joanna Simon made her debut as an opera singer. She performed at the New York City Opera at the time as Cherubino in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. She won the Marian Anderson Award the same year.

She was best renowned as a “smoky-voiced mezzo-soprano” when performing opera. She was the first actress to perform the part of Pantasilea, an Italian courtesan from the 16th century, in Alberto Ginastera’s Bomarzo.
