The two players, Ons Jabeur and Veronika Kudermetova have faced off three times in the past, and the Russian has won each match.
In the most recent of these matchups, Kudermetova won in straight sets at the San Jose Open earlier this year.
Prediction
While playing Shelby Rogers in the third round, Jabeur struggled to get going early, and the American paid the price before her lower-ranked rival found her rhythm. In the end, Jabeur needed two hours and 16 minutes to defeat Rogers and secure her first-ever spot in the fourth round of the US Open.
The match featured a total of 10 serve breaks, including four from Jabeur’s racquet, and the Tunisian number one prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The difference between the second and third sets was mostly due to Jabeur’s higher first serve percentage (around 87% as opposed to 57% in the first). Jabeur had previously defeated Madison Brengle and Elizabeth Mandlik in straight sets in the opening two rounds.
On the other hand, Kudermetova had never progressed past the first round of the US Open before this year’s event. This time, she has already advanced to the fourth round and hasn’t yet dropped a set. The Russian’s third-round triumph over Dalma Galfi was the easiest of them, the match lasted just 48 minutes, and Kudermetova won 6-2, 6-0. While her opponent received the same from her five times, she faced none.
Earlier in the US Open Series, at the San Jose Open, Kudermetova advanced as far as the semifinals before losing in the first round in Canada and reaching the third round in Cincinnati.
Jabeur hasn’t been performing as fluently as she could, and Kudermetova will try to fully exploit that. While Jabeur is the early favourite, no one will be surprised to see Kudermetova challenge her opponent, and in either case, it could be witnessed as a three-setter.
