Unsurprisingly, the distressing scenes have sparked outrage among parents, who allege that their children are routinely tasked with chores, including cleaning toilets, fetching water, and maintaining the school premises.
Parents expressed their concerns that the chores assigned to their children were leaving them exhausted, which in turn hindered their ability to focus on their education. One mother shared her heartbreak, explaining that they send their children to school to study, not to clean. She revealed that when the children returned home, they were too tired to complete their homework, as they had spent their time cleaning instead of learning. Additionally, the parent mentioned how distressing it was to hear that the teachers were not prioritizing their students’ education.
In response to the viral video and the parents’ complaints, the District Education Officer acted swiftly and suspended the school principal while an investigation was underway. The school, located in Palakkodu, caters to approximately 150 students from tribal communities.
