It was reported that Premier League referees, during a charity trip to Indonesia, behaved in a manner reminiscent of young footballers, according to onlookers. The group, which included Andre Marriner, Martin Atkinson, Kevin Friend, and David Coote, were seen enjoying a boisterous night out, posing with women and engaging in lively, and at times, suggestive behavior.

The pictures of the party have once again gone viral in the midst of David Coote’s recent viral video where he’s seen lambasting Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool. Coote who has since been suspended by the PGMOL after being heard calling Klopp a c*nt, was seen getting cosy with a woman in Indonesia back in 2019 with his fellow group of Premier League married referees.

Andre Marriner, born on January 1, 1971, is a retired English professional football referee from Solihull, West Midlands. He was a member of the Birmingham County Football Association. In 2005, he was elevated to the prestigious list of Select Group Referees.

In May 2013, it was noted that he had officiated the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Wigan Athletic at Wembley Stadium. The following year, in March 2014, during a 6–0 victory for Chelsea over Arsenal, an unfortunate error occurred when Marriner mistakenly sent off Kieran Gibbs for a deliberate handball, a foul that had actually been committed by Oxlade-Chamberlain. After a distinguished 23-year career, Marriner retired at the conclusion of the 2022–23 season.

Why Marriner was dragged into the controversy?

One witness described the scene, noting that the referees appeared to be acting as though they were much younger, with their partying and dancing drawing comparisons to randy footballers, despite their ages. Marriner, a father of one, was caught on camera with a woman sitting on his lap, while Atkinson, also a father, was seen grinning as he posed with a woman in a red dress.

Coote, the only unmarried referee in the group, was photographed dancing with a woman, while Friend was spotted whispering into another woman’s ear. The group, which was in Batam on a charity trip, visited an orphanage and participated in a golf tournament. However, their behavior on the night out, which included posing for pictures with women at a local bar, sparked controversy.

While it was noted that none of the women involved appeared to be s*x workers, the location itself is known for its red-light district, which fueled further scrutiny. Despite the attention, the referees’ charitable contributions to Indonesian children and a UK hospice were also part of the trip, with the group reportedly funding the entire visit. The Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, the organization overseeing the referees, declined to comment on the matter.
