The nation mourns the loss of the veteran sports commentator, often known as the ‘voice of Indian football’. He died due to a rare motor neuron disease which affects the body in a way that the nerves in the spine and brain stop functioning over a period of time.

After being put on a wheelchair for most part of the last two years and then to a ventilator throughout the month of October, Novy Kapadia succumbed to the disease on Thursday at the age of 68.

Novy who was born in 1953 in Delhi was aged 68 at the time of his death. He had one sister, Bonny who has also passed away.

His views, opinions, judgements and explanations penned down across several years in journals, newspapers, broadcasts and websites about the Indian football scene in the sport’s initial developmental stages is incredible. Having been the editor of the Durand Journal for many years, Kapadia was also involved in providing his voice for games in the I- League and its precursor, the National Football League.

He was exceedingly zealous when it came to viewing sports, especially football matches from close quarters which explains why Ambedkar Stadium was his second home. Not just football, his interest in sports like tennis, cricket among others remains unparalleled till date. Novy covered the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth games and the Asian games over a period spanning over three decades.
