Prediction

Despite a few injury scares, Djokovic has been in incredible shape throughout the tournament. With victories over Grigor Dimitrov, Alex de Minaur, Enzo Couacaud, and Roberto Carballes Baena, the Serb advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

He made a good start in his match against Andrey Rublev, taking the first set 6-1. In the second set, which he won 6-2, Djokovic maintained his advantage.

The Serb was simply too skilled for Rublev, despite his best efforts to mount a comeback. He advanced to the Australian Open semifinals with a 6-4 victory in the third set.

On the other hand, Ben Shelton, who was competing in his first Major quarterfinal was Paul’s opponent in the last eight.

After a closely fought first set, Paul defeated the 20-year-old in a tiebreak to win the second set 6-3. The World No. 35 grabbed the fourth set 6-4 to go to his first Grand Slam semifinal after Shelton battled back to take the third set 7-5.

Paul has had a fantastic tournament, a well-deserved payoff for the work he has in over the past two years to make his ATP Tour debut. This shouldn’t be the last time we see Paul competing in a Major.

It’s difficult to imagine anything he does better than Djokovic, though. To put it another way, it is difficult to imagine how he will win a set, let alone the game.

Djokovic’s injury issues appear to be behind him, and even though the score does not exactly reflect how convincing of a victory he had over Rublev in the quarterfinals, the World No. 5 was nonetheless defeated in straight sets.

If Djokovic can continue performing at that level, which there is no reason to believe he can, this should be a similarly simple situation.
