Prediction
Top seed Novak Djokovic and Roman Safiullin will face off in the Tel Aviv Open semifinal on Saturday.
The Serb, who had a bye, will fight Pablo Andujar in the next round. Djokovic defeated him 6-0, 6-3 while playing at his best to go to the quarterfinals and take on Canadian Vasek Pospisil. Intense competition between the two players’ first game resulted in a tiebreak. Djokovic held a 5-1 lead before Pospisil fought back to draw the game at 5-5. The next two points were won by the Serb to take the opening set.
Djokovic earned an early break in the second set, but Pospisil returned the favour. The Serb broke the Canadian in the penultimate game of the set before holding serve to win the match and advance to the Tel Aviv Open semifinals.
Safiullin, on the other hand, defeated Hugo Grenier with scores of 3-6, 6-4, and 6-2 in the opening round of the Tel Aviv Open. He next defeated Tomas Marco Etcheverry 6-1, 6-4 to go to the quarterfinals and face Arthur Rinderknech.
The Russian, who had earlier advanced to the Open 13 in Marseille’s final four, overcame the Frenchman once more in straight sets to advance to his second semifinal of the year.
With his serve, Djokovic has dominated the tournament, winning 54 of the total 70 points he has delivered. Along with his precise and powerful shotmaking, the Serbian will exert pressure on his opponent with his serve return.
Safiullin can get some free points with his serve, but he needs to be careful not to double-fault too often, especially while confronting some of Djokovic’s return techniques. The Russian will strive to maximise his service games against the Serb and cannot afford to commit too many errors.
Djokovic is the clear favourite for the match as the Serbian keeps finding his them and getting better.
