Head To Head: 7-4

In their previous meetings, Djokovic and Medvedev have won 7-4 in favour for the Serb. At the 2022 Astana Open, he triumphed over the Russian after the latter withdrew at the end of the second set.

Prediction

On Friday, the 2022 ATP Finals group stage will include a match between former World No. 1 players Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic.

In his second group match, Medvedev faced the difficult task of defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas after suffering a difficult three-set loss to Andrey Rublev. He lost a break right away, falling behind 3-0 in the opening set. The Russian quickly dropped the set because it was difficult for him to make up for the deficit. In the second set, which was followed by a tie-break, neither player came close to a breakpoint. Despite having a 4-1 advantage, Medvedev lost it as Tsitsipas fought back.

The 2021 US Open winner then defended three match points to win the tie-break and force a decider. In the third set, Medvedev led 5-3 and became the first player to go up a break. Later, with the score tied at 5-4, he took the match’s final serve, but Tsitsipas broke his serve. After that, the Greek was able to force a tie-break, which he easily won to defeat the 26-year-old 6-3, 6-7 (11), 7-6.

Meanwhile, in his next group encounter, Djokovic faced Andrey Rublev after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. For the majority of the first set, neither player faltered when serving. At 5-4 in the set, the Russian was serving to tie the game, but the 35-year-old was able to break the Russian’s serve and win the game. In the second set, Djokovic improved even more. He won his next three games to take a 3-0 lead. The Serb won the next three games to clinch the match 6-4, 6-1, and guarantee his place in the semifinals after Rublev held serve for the first game.

Medvedev is capable of competing with Djokovic and possibly even beating him. However, he hasn’t been the same since losing this year’s Australian Open. He appears to have suffered some mental damage as a result, since he has struggled to prevail in close games against elite competitors. This will probably be an easy victory for the Serb given his current level.
