In the opening match of his group, Rublev began his campaign against Daniil Medvedev. He gained an early advantage of 3-1 and maintained it for some time. After serving the first set at 5-3, the 25-year-old was broken. At 6-5, he had a few set points on his opponent’s serve but couldn’t convert them. Rublev jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the successive tie-break.

The former World No. 1 eventually won the set, but only after making a few costly errors of his own, some cautious play by Medvedev, and some incorrect calls from the linesmen. Rublev quickly put his differences aside and recovered from his disappointment. He won the second set by twice breaking his opponent’s serve to force a third set. The third set quickly moved into a tie-break, but both players maintained consistency on serve.

Rublev had a 6-3 lead and was once again in the lead, but he missed four match points as Medvedev refused to give up easily. Ultimately, the 25-year-old won 6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-6 on his fourth match point (7).

Meanwhile, in his opening match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Djokovic began his quest for a sixth ATP Finals victory. He broke the Greek’s serve in the very first game of the match, and he won the opening set easily thanks to the advantage. In the second set, Tsitsipas played a little bit better, but he still fell far short of Djokovic’s challenge. As the set entered a tie-break, the two players remained unwavering on service, and the Serb won it to take the victory and win the match 6-4, 7-6. (4).
